BUC$ Account and Printing
September 29 , 2008
BUC$ is a prepaid debit account on your ID card that can be used to pay for printing when your quota is exhausted, library photocopying, paying fines, and vending.
If you have a BU ID card and a meal plan, you have a BUC$ account.
If you have a BUC$ Account...
...and your print quota is exhausted, add funds to your account online OR use the BUC$ Machines in the Bartle Library, Science Library, and University Downtown Center. You can also call or visit the Meal Plan Office just outside the Susquehanna Room, Monday - Friday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., 607-777-6000.
To add funds using cash or credit, swipe your card in a BUC$ Machine and follow the directions.
Do not purchase a new BUC$ card from the machine. It will not allow you to print black & white or color pages in the Information Commons. Read more.
If you don't have a BUC$ account...
...find out how to set one up here.
... you can purchase a card from the BUC$ Machine for $1.00. You must then add funds to the card using the same machine. This card only allows you to print using the Libraries' community printer, not the Information Commons printers.
About Printing and the BUC$ Cards Purchased from BUC$ Machines
Funds on a BUC$ card purchased from a BUC$ Machine are not related to BUC$ accounts on BU ID cards.
The funds on the BUC$ card can not be used to print pages from the Information Commons printers.
In the Libraries, the BUC$ card can only be used to photocopy, print to the Community Printers and pay fines. See other uses.

To avoid commons problems and save time and paper, know these tips for printing large PDF and PowerPoint files.
PDFs
Problem: PDF files take a very long time to print
Cause: The file size of the PDF is large due to one or more of these conditions:
- 10 or more pages
- many graphics/images
- many fonts
Solution: Break down print job into smaller pieces. Print 5 or less pages at a time
Problem: 900 RIP Service error on printer LED display
Solution: Inform on-duty student consultant of this error
DO NOT print this job from another printer as the same error will occur
DO reprint the PDF choosing 'Print as Image' from the Adobe Acrobat application, not the browser.

Fancy backgrounds that may have borders, colors or images usually in full reverse (negative image - white lettering on black or colored backgroud).
