Interlibrary Loan Services

Description

Interlibrary Loan services expand the range of research materials available for instruction and scholarship. Materials which are not owned by the University Libraries and not deliverable in full-text format may be obtained from other local, state, national and international libraries through this service.

Binghamton University collections are enhanced by its memberships in consortiums such as the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Research Libraries Group (RLG), Empire Express, and the South Central Regional Library Council (SCRLC). The materials available for scholarship are expanded by reciprocal agreements among major research libraries.

Research Libraries Group Shared Resources Program (SHARES)

The Binghamton University Libraries membership in the Research Libraries Group (RLG) allows Binghamton faculty, emeritus faculty, students, and academic and professional library staff onsite access to the collections and services of institutions participating in the RLG Shared Resources (SHARES) Program.

  • Onsite access includes the privilege of using material in the building. On-site access does not grant borrowing or interlibrary loan privileges.
  • Everyone should be encouraged to visit during regular business hours. A telephone call in advance may be needed to confirm library hours.
  • Where building access is controlled, onsite visitors will be asked to present their Binghamton valid ID card. Additional identification may be requested when a picture ID is not used.
  • Where stack access is controlled, faculty and graduate students showing a valid ID will be accorded stack access under the same policies applied to local faculty and graduate students. Visiting undergraduates may or may not be granted stack access. Access to special or restricted collections or materials is also possible if arranged in advance.
  • Visitors can expect to receive reference services, photocopy and database search services at the local constituency rate, and other services available to comparable patrons at host institutions.
  • Onsite access does not apply to alumni, retired faculty (except for emeritus faculty), courtesy or fee borrowers, spouses, or docents.

Who May Borrow

Currently affiliated Binghamton University faculty, students, and staff engaged in research and research associates are eligible. *IMPORTANT NOTE: You must have a valid University ID and a University e-mail account (binghamton.edu) in order to register. Communication about your interlibrary loan requests are handled through e-mail.

Requests

Interlibrary Loan requests are submitted online using ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan program. To begin using ILLiad, eligible borrowers must register. Go to the Libraries' home page and click on BORROWING, then Interlibrary Loan ILLiad to begin the process. For registration assistance, please contact the Interlibrary Loan Office at 607-777-4985 or e-mail the ILL Office. For most efficient service, when research needs require extensive use of Interlibrary Loan, requesters should consult with the Head of Interlibrary Loan. (607-777-5805)

Delivery

Requesters should allow two to four weeks for receipt of most materials. Special formats or unique titles may take a longer period of time. When materials arrive, notification is sent to the e-mail address you have entered into the ILLiad registration form. Books may be picked up at the Bartle or Science Circulation Desks. Most photocopies are delivered electronically as a PDF file. If paper copies are preferred, they are sent to your address (campus or home) entered into the ILLiad form. If fee payment is necessary, materials will be held at the Bartle Circulation Desk and payments may be made at that desk. Binghamton University will honor restrictions on use imposed by the lending library; therefore, some titles must be used in the Library. A Binghamton University ID card is required to access these materials.

Loan Periods

Loan periods vary from one to four weeks, depending on the policies of the lending institution. The date due indicates the date materials must be returned to the Bartle or Science Library Circulation Desk. Unless the lending library has specified nonrenewal, ILL books may be renewed, in-person at the Bartle or Science Library Circulation Desk.

Limitations

Reciprocal agreements among research institutions support the loan of most library materials as requested. Exceptions include reference books, art books, audio/visual, rare or restricted materials, dissertations and journals. Articles from journals can usually be photocopied. The ILL Office, however, must comply with the U.S. Copyright Law. No more than five copies a calendar year of a journal title published within the last five years may be requested unless the journal is available through a document delivery provider. Copyright fees may be applicable.

Fees and Fines

Occasionally, costs are assessed by the lending library. Fees that exceed $20.00 per item may be passed on to the requester. Fees cover books, photocopies and microform duplicates. Patrons will be notified of projected cost prior to final processing of the request. The assessed fee does not include subsequent fees for lost, damaged or overdue items.

When materials are returned late, fines accrue according to a schedule of $1.00 per day. Abuse of ILL privileges may result in suspension of those privileges.

Borrower Responsibility

Patrons are responsible for the material borrowed and are liable for replacement costs charged by the lending library if material is lost. Damaged materials may have costs for repairs. Material must be returned by the stated due date in the same condition it was received with the book bands still in place. Patrons will be placed on the University Obligations System for materials lost, damaged or overdue.
